Hello Watchers and Deviant Community,

just wanted to say how happy I am to be apart of Deviant. It took me a long time to sign up as i've been carrying this big, cyber chip around on my shoulder: I was convinced that some kind of bizarre, psychological metamorphosis came over people when they got behind a keyboard and their integrity, dignity and good sense just flew out the window. The plague of YouTube 'haters' out there, spewing out their daily venom, definitely seemed the commonplace on the net, but why? Maybe like road rage we have shadowy, nameless individuals lurking behind machines of great power and purpose, overwhelmed by their own lack of self worth and drunk with a newfound extension of technical strength. Whatever primal driver is behind a persons' ability to transform from nice to asshole in a virtual, nano second is beside the scope of this little journal blast - but just to say that Deviant seems to be a forum where support, decency and (dare I say it) character dominate and is actually encouraged - in fact people seem to be falling over each other to be honorable  - imagine that, millions of total strangers being nice to each other! I would suspect that any individual brave enough to reveal a portion of their own soul (through any visual media) to a sea of total strangers (even if they are fellow artists) has already crossed that perilous bridge between anonymity and truth.

Hello.

I've worked with acrylics most of my professional life. I began with flat applications on canvas but always felt the need to 'pull' the image into more of a three dimensional space. So I started adding thicker and thicker layers of paint, gesso and modeling paste. From there I used shaped Styrofoam applied to a plywood base, covered with gesso, paint, fabric and found objects. See folders 'Showgirl as Psycho-pomp ' and 'Exposed'.

Living in Los Angeles I've had the opportunity to meet many talented people involved in the film industry and specifically special effects. I studied their discipline of creating prosthetics and body molds. With this knowledge I developed a unique style which involved casting 'live' models (with dental alginate and Plaster of Paris) and then, through a series of steps, creating a silicone 'mother mold' which allowed me to produce 2-3 highly life-like and dimensional, fiberglass images. See folder 'The Planets'.

Eventually I needed to abandon this incredibly complicated and expensive process, I felt satisfied that I had pushed my pursuit of 'dimensional paintings' to its' limits, and decided to regroup and return to basics. With a master's degree in History of Religion, I had always been fascinated with all religious traditions (See folder: 'Myth & Lore') and especially the strange and sometimes violent relationship between Judaism and Christianity. Over the course of seven years, I created a single piece of art entitled 'The Nazarene Cipher'. This massive work involved 186 intricately painted panels (icons) applied to a wooden structure 13' x 6'. See folder 'Nazarene Cipher'

Around 2010 I began painting animals, a passion that has always been near and dear to my heart. Animals of all sorts have been a constant source of strength, humor and inspiration throughout my life. Technically, the raw and haphazard quality of the wooden board allows me to juxtapose my own methodical, technical and intricate style.

Looking back, I'd say the solitary portrait is the most defining thread that has run throughout my entire body of work. Whether, human, supernatural or animal, I have never seemed to have been able to shake this mode of expression; a lone figure, self contained, intricately adorned, engaged in the world yet standing aloof from it.

Thanks and enjoy the work.
