Whether it be bought in a supermarket, a fast food joint or a swanky, upscale restaurant, the odds are when you eat chicken it’ll be a Cornish Rock or Cornish Cross. These breeds have dominated the commercial poultry industry for more than 50 years due to their great size and rapid growth rate. The addition of steroids and other drugs greatly accelerate this weight gain, so much so that many are unable to walk because their legs are too weak to support their huge upper bodies. Chickens raised for their meat (broilers) are usually stored in huge, windowless sheds, up to 40,000 at a time. For 8 weeks they live day in and day out in complete darkness, barely moving and standing in a sea of their own filth.

When the time comes to be processed, they are roughly thrown into crates for transport to the slaughterhouse and often hauled hundreds of miles without food or water. Upon arrival they are hung upside down by the feet and their throats systematically slit as they pass thru a series of mechanized blades.

Today Purdue University estimates that some 8 billion chickens are consumed in the U.S. alone every year . . . yes, you read correctly 8 billion.

This is a wonderful piece, albeit the haunting description. Until late last year I had no idea what a Cornish X was, nor that they were the primary meat bird. They always show on the KFC and Ingam adds how their chooks are lean and free ranging, I had no clue what was really going on. It's disgusting that they try and show the public one thing when the truth is another.

I was volunteering at a zoo through September and October last year. At first I was really excited about it, but then when I got there I realized that they were taking the baby chicks from the farm area of their zoo and feeding them to the exotic animals at the the other end. I ended up leaving after 5 weeks there, and bought home three baby chicks with me. Sadly two of them passed away suddenly, but the third has managed to make it to adulthood. Today he is a handsome, beautiful, sweet, loving rooster named Russell (Russi for short). He is a Cornish X. We take special care to always make sure he's as comfortable as possible, we churn up the ground so he can walk on his wobbly legs, we carry him when it's too far to walk and we feed him a special diet of cooked vegetables and rice to ensure that he doesn't gain "too much" weight. But watching the way he's forced to live his days, and knowing what his life would be like without human aid is heartbreaking. Seeing how gentle and sweet Russi is, I can't believe that humans could abuse his breed so much.

I was an avid chicken eater for my whole life, but after meeting Russi and learning the truth about his breed I can't possibly bring myself to eat it anymore.
