Barong!: Spirit of the Dance

This piece was created using shaped Styrofoam on a plywood base and then applying layers upon layers of paper mache, fabric and paper dipped in glue and allowed to dry. The entire work was then painted with acrylic.
ABOUT THIS PIECE:
An epic battle between the forces of good and evil is represented in the Barong dance from Indonesia. According to their mythology Barong (or Barong Ket) is a lion-like creature, a guardian, protector and lord of benevolent spirits who fights against his arch enemy, the demon queen Rangda. In this incredible drama Rangda unleashes her black magic upon the soldiers of Eriangga (the 10th century king of Bali) and the men, seized by evil desire, try to use their own weapons and kill themselves. Before the soldiers are able to stab themselves Barong neutralizes the spell with good magic and ultimately defeats the evil queen.
It is no light matter to be a team member of the Barong ritual. There is a stern and fascinating warning for all those who choose to participate. It is believed that the dance summons such powerful forces that the players might be overcome by Rangda's evil spell resulting in severe bodily injury and even death.
