acrylic and silver leaf on fiberglass
2002
To create this series I developed a process that involved casting a live model using dental alginate. This alginate mold was filled with liquid plasticine which when dried was used as a base for a 'mother mold' made from silicon and fiberglass - from this mother mold i was able to produce 2-3 highly detailed, dimensional fiberglass paintings which were painted or covered with gold or silver leaf. Even though they hang on the wall they rise beyond the frame, in some places more than 6 inches.
The energy surrounding the moon is inherently 'occult' in nature. Its' 'hiddeness' and subtle complexities are its' most profound attributes. Historically the moon has been regarded with both awe and dread; as a force exciting powerful emotions ranging from deep sensuality to raving madness. As a celestial body it can only be seen when illuminated by the light of another. Unlike the sun's rays, moonlight reveals form through suggestion of greytone and shadow. Another unique attribute is its' strange connection with the oceans and all water. It directs the movement of tides and presides over a vast, shifting liquid filled with creatures both wondrous and terrible.
