The Javanese Rhino or 'Lesser one-horned Rhinoceros' (Rhinoceros Sondaicul) has been given the dubious title of the 'world's rarest large mammal'. It's only home is in the Ujung Kulon National Park, Indonesia with a population of some 40 individuals. The last remaining member of a population in Cat Tien, Vietnam was shot by poachers in 2011. While wars and interbreeding diseases have contributed to their rapid decline, the greatest factor is poaching, mainly for their horns (fetching as much as $30,000 on the black market). The horn is highly valued in traditional Chinese medicine as a cure for fever, rheumatism, snakebite, typhoid, food poisoning and 'devil possession'. There are no Javan Rhinos in captivity.
